A friend of mine who doesn't know much about hardware asked me to throw a build together for him and help him learn about it. His budget is $1000 USD give or take a little. He already has a mouse and Windows 7. He mostly uses it for gaming, although likes to watch Blu-Ray as well.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or alternate builds for him. I've been out of the loop regarding GPU's for a couple months now and I'm not sure what is best bang for your buck anymore.. Last thing I remember was dropping $500 for 2 6870's :o

Anywho, thanks ahead of time for the help, here is the build I came up with:

i'd be glad to help but i cant look up at you cart. asking me login and pasword

but i can say that
i5 + good SLI/XFIRE motherboard. (some asus p67revolution, i personaly use asrock p67 fatal1ty) you can also go for Z68 chipset motherboard...
4Gb memory is a minimum
a good cpu cooler.
a good powersupply. around 700wat for you setup

and rest is hard drive so i go for 2tb + ssd but its clearly overated.

2500k
ASUS P8P67 REV 3.0 or similar
Corsair Vengeance LP 4-8GB or similar
MSI HD 6950 Tiwn Frozr III or similar
CM690 II Advanced or similar
Silverstone Strider Essential 700W or similar
Hyper 212
Samsung Blu-Ray drive
Samsung F3 1TB (as many as needed)

That should come to around $1000 including the request BD drive.

$1000 eh? GTX 560 Ti 2GB from MSi, 2x4GB of RAM, i5 2500k, P8P67 WS Revolution from Asus for motherboard... all you'd need is a PSU worthy of that system.

Thanks everybody.
I had a feeling the link wouldn't work. I'll check on that.
I think I'm gonna let him decide over the 560ti and the 6950
As far as processor goes, i5 it is.
Finally, I also think the ssd is kind of overrated, unless you have the extra $. I think I'm gonna upgrade myself and give him my old one as a gift.
Either way, thanks. It's appreciated!

Overrated?

Have you ever owned one?

Best upgrade I ever made to my system, it was like going from 512mb of ram to 2gb in terms of speed. Everything loads faster and is more responsive.
I wonder how I ever lived with an HDD...

Yeah I have one right now, and while it is a great improvement, when you're trying to cut corners price-wise, I feel it can be left out.
