I am looking to get a thin laptop around 25mm thin that is similar to the Macbook Air and these new Ultrabooks. My budget is £300, i know i am not going to get anywhere near the spec of an ultrabook/macbook air for that, but i am not looking to, bear with me. I wont be doing allot of resource intensive stuff on it, its for taking to uni for taking notes and some programming and web development etc, something my u100 netbook can already do no problem with win7, i just really want a bigger screen 10" is a tad to small, 13" or 14" would be just nice.

But, (there is always a but) i was hoping i could get something powerfull enought to play BF2 and BF2142 (not at high settings ovc but say medium low) I have been doing allot of research as i know allot of the integrated graphics can't play bf2 and 2142 due to the lack of shaders or something, but then i found out about this program, Swiftshader which eliminates that problem (to an extent anyway), check it out on youtube pretty neat if you have a powerfull enough cpu and crap onboard graphics.

So here is what i found so far on the web.

Meenee 13.2" Notebook

This one is nice and thin and is what really got me looking into these thin notebook's, problem is it only has a Atom d425 @ 1.8ghz which is pleanty for doing what i want bar playing bf2 and 2142, also found out it has a intel GMA x3150 which i think is ok and might get away with play the 2 games but i duno about the cpu... Here's a couple of video's

Video 1 Video 2

NoteBook 13.3" (EVOsys & Generic)

Here is a bit of a funny one, i first came across this laptop on ebay under the name of EVOsys. here is a link the good thing about this one is it has a Atom D525 (real dual core with 4 threads) running at 1.8ghz though i don't know what the onboard graphics is. I done some more seaching on ebay and found this link which look the exact same as the EVOsys and has the exact same spec, good thing about this one is that it tells you what onboard graphics is has GMA 965, which i don't know allot about but do you think this might be able to play bf2 and 2142 witht he help from the real dual core atom and that Swiftshader programing i was walking about earlery?

Let me know what you guy's think as i have been out of the whole computing loop since i started uni.

Best Regards, Anton2k.

Oh, and hear is my website if you guy's have some time, it's a video blog abit like break.com, just a little side project of mine... http://www.ClipCrowd.com

put it this way... I wouldn't put anything but linux on an atom - Even the dual core ones are shockingly bad for windows. I have the 1.6Ghz dual core one running as a firewall - it's great for a firewall but in no way what so ever would I install windows on it.

I'd recommend two options:

1. increase your budget to £350 - £400 and get an i3 laptop. (not as thin but will be much more useful)

2. Get an ipad1 or something as they are great for lecture notes - then use your current laptop for use in your dorm.

MSI X460DX
To me the best in the category
http://ncix.com/prod...MSI%2FMicroStar
800CAD is about 493 pounds, but its worth the 193 pounds over your budget
or
Acer Aspire AS4830TG-6576
http://ncix.com/prod...anufacture=Acer
700CAD about 431 pounds

Cheers

Please in the future locate you post in the most correct area of the forum. This topic fits more into laptops than offtopic. This makes the forum much easier to search for relevant information.

EG

Thread has been relocated, so its no sweat. Just a tip for the future.

Hard Drives, Networking , Laptops is where the thread is located now. I have already moved it and its much simpler for me to do it than it would be for me to require you to create a new thread.

I am going to see about getting a section setup for netbooks and mobile devices such as ipads and the like.

But all is well no issues.

I would recommend my ASUS as its pretty thin has a decent I3 for games and apps runs win7 really well and has a GT 540 (100 cores) basically a 2GB VRAM 9800 GTX and runs games fine at 720p. Its around £500 the same model with just the I5 GPU is £350'ish and great for anything but games.

Alienware and others sell gamign alptops with about the same hardware for £700-1000+ so its a massive bargin. Really complex games like skyrim or Bf3 you can;t fully max with AA buit most other games you can as the I5 are dual core 4 thread (still not a true quad though) and the 540 is pretty decent GPU for 720p.

I only paid £550 for that a few months back of scan.co.uk but the HDD shortage has ruined prices so might be best to wait or hunt around.

Thanks for the reply DLUK and allthough that link is a very good offer for the spec i am looking for something a little slimmer. I found out today that the meenee 13.3" i was talking about in the first post has a gma 3150 and that it supports shaders 3.0 or somthing so i will be bale to play bf2 although i duno how well but on low and low res i think i might get away with a min fps of around 25-30fps, all i do is fly in bf any way lol i do more infantry in 2142 titan mode ftw!, i was gona upgrade my pc (specs in sig) to play bf3 but bf3 had failed in my books and well i don't see the sense in upgrading my current setup to play nothing i would like to play bf2 and 2142 on the laptop though sit back in the bed with a controller hooked up :D
