Thanks to a government mistake I have been given a cheque for £1074!! I am of course going to blow spend it wisely on a new gaming machine. I will be posting my progress here as and when it happens.

Here's what I'm going for:

CPU: Intel 1155 2700K.
MB: Asus Maximus IV Extreme.
GPU: GTX580.
Case: CM HAF X

I will be using my old RAM, HDD's, PSU, BR Drive, and a few other bits and bobs including one of my GTX280's as a PhysX card! I will start off with just air cooling at first but do plan on getting it wet some time before the summer.

Here's my Ebay Shopping list...

Cant wait to get hold of that lot and starting a new build! Does anyone have any ideas to add or change?

you "can't" buy the 2700K and the maximus IV extreme and then put a Zalman cooler on it...

Noctua ND-D14 or the thermaltake equivalent would be more appropriate (NH-D14 is better than the Corsair H70: proven by Linus: http://www.youtube.c...h?v=AU6W_YkqILY)

haha faster than Derbixrace!

x3 to the noctua cooler . i would also consider the 2600k unless the 2700k is on special...there isnt much of a difference between the two

also try to stay away from ebay if possible. First off to spite what anyone might tell you, there is really NO warranty. the product maybe damaged, or w.e and its a shifty person. spend the extra few $ and get your components from a trusted store.

I'd go with a different setup do minimize noise and maximize speed.

Case: SilverStone Raven RV03 ≈ £95
Motherboard: GigaByte GA-X79-UD3, X79 ≈ £170
CPU: Intel Core i7-3930K ≈ £465
CPU Cooler: Noctua NH-D14 ≈ £65
Mounting for the CPU cooler: Noctua NM-l2011 mounting kit ≈ £7
Memory: Corsair XMS3 DIMM kit 8GB DDR3-1600 CL9-9-9-24 ≈ £45
Graphic card: MSI N560GTX-Ti Twin Frozr II 2GB5/OC ≈ £200

Total: ≈ £1047 (if I didn't make a mistake)

Now if you allow me explain my setup:

The 2011 type motherboard will make your setup more future proof, so will the 6 core CPU @ 3.2 GHz. With a little knowladge and careful work, you probably will able to overclock that CPU past 4 GHz anyways. That's plenty of speed for any setup! I've chosen the Noctua D14 obviously because it's the best cooler out there. Also I picked out the Silverstone Raven RV03 case, because it's a very very good case. It's airflow is just awesome and it beats the not ideally designed CoolerMaster HAF-cases any day. The only real problem with the SilverStone Raven case is the size of the bracket for the PSU. Please do tell us what power supply you're using or intend to use. Otherwise it's hard for me to know weather that suggestion of mine with the case is just ***BAD***.

The graphic card is a pick of mine, which I'm not sure off either. It really and truly depends on the monitor and resolution you're using. Not to mention that the AMD HD7000 Series should be coming soon, and it makes any GPU purchase just plain stupid at the moment. But if it absolutely has to be now, the 2GB card I picked for you is ideal for any single screen setup up to a resolution of 1920x1200. If you're using 2560x1440 or 2560x1600 the type of setup you chose is better due to the graphic card. The MSI is quiet, it has 2GB of VRAM (which believe me you'll need) and it's fast enough for pretty much any game at the "normal" resolutions. But either way I'd personally wait for the HD7000 Series. Even if you won't buy them, it should kick in the prices of all the current cards, so you could afford a better card in just a few weeks compared to now.

Let me know what you think.

Update!!

I have binned the idea of air cooling - I'll just migrate my liquid cooling kit over as I plan to overclock straight away. (After flushing it all out and slicing off an inch or so off each of the hoses from where they were attached.) I have bought an i7 bracket for my water block for about £5. I have also managed to buy a GTX580 for about £230 and its running my currant build now (I just couldn't wait!) Still waiting for the HAF X case, Maximus IV, and a 2700k to arrive.

Haven't built a rig for a while so I'm looking forward to it, just cant remember where I put my hammer...

I will add though that the Thermaltake CLP0554 SpinQ would look really good with this build if I was going for air.

I have decided that I'll be keeping my pair of GTX280's in my new rig - GTX580 for main Gaming Screen, GTX280(1) for second monitor, GTX280(2) for PhysX only. None of these cards will be in SLI.

Piccys and stuff to come when the rest of my kit arrives.

Brian

the thermalright silver arrow was review by many to be better than the Noctua NH-D14...but for a small factor if you compare with others: can't find any reviews that compares both the 212+ and the NH-D14

don't buy a gpu yet 28nm is right around the corner.. or better yet just wait we might see a 3920k soon with a cheaper price
the gaming you see today is actually nothing versus the future gaming.. even though it's fun to our eyes.. too bad we will be dead though before we even see the future.. (This means if your thinking your having fun with your life think again because your not compared to what's going to be going out.. Your going to be missing a lot of fun and experiences like waves and echos going through your body)

I see some good advice in this thread, but a couple of things have me scratching my head.

First off waiting for the next big thing will have you in a life long holding pattern, because the next big thing is always just around a corner. Not a single person here has any real clue when the higher end of AMD or NV GPU will actually be available for sale. A paper launch means nadda.

Second off I see Jfry said dont buy a GTX 560 Ti if playing BF3. EG scratches head !

I built myself a budget rig and its what I have been playing BF3 on for the last 2 weeks. Asus P8Z68-M Pro Mobo, i5 2500K @ 5.0 24/7, and a GTX 560 amp is what I am playing on. Now granted it wont run the game on all ultra settings, but I use it over my 3 way SLI 470 rig, so that ought to tell you something.

But do as you heart desires cause thats whats gonna make you the happiest. In many cases waiting is warranted and in many cases it isnt. Also I never spend my money on first release because the refresh is almost always better and cheaper to buy.

So theres my 2 cents

If you play BF3 with a 560 Ti its glitched as hell.
I can link personal pictures if you want.

Just wondering with my new build, the mobo has 4 Sata 6 ports and 4 normal Sata ports, does it matter if I plug a normal Sata HDD into a Sata 6 port? Also Does it matter which Sata leads I use? I have 5 HDD's and 1 BR drive for the build. Not sure if I'm getting too old and confused, or just out of touch...

The cables don't matter and it shouldn't matter where you plug each device into.
I prefer to use the chipset controlled ports as there will be less chance of issues but it doesn't change much.
Also don't forget to install the 3rd party controller drivers if needed.
