Printer info over a 'network'

It's a non standard setup and I've been told it's not possible. Then again, the same site said "forget it" to the question of setting the printer up in the first place on a V2 Homehub...
The 'network' of sorts is as follows: Broadband -> Firewall PC -> BT Homehub V2.
The Homehub is set as a network switch with 2 PCs and a laptop hardwired via the ethernet ports and a wireless laptop.
The Homehub has a USB 2.0 port on the back with a USB hub connected to it with a USB dongle and the printer attached to it. I can easily get access to the USB dongle and eventually have easy access to the printer for printing, checking print queue, printer functions (head cleaning / alignment etc) - but not the ink levels.
Is it possible on this setup? or is it asking too much from this recycled parts setup?

Sounds like however you printer isn't a proper network printer and as such the home hub is acting as a printer server which could stop the relevant ink information getting to your computer.
